Pantry Pest Control

Pantry Pest Control — Moths, Beetles and Stored-Product Pests

Pantry pests are small moths and beetles that infest dry goods like flour, cereal, grains, pet food, bird seed, rice, dried fruit and pasta. Most pantry pest problems start with a single infested package — often something that was already infested when it was purchased — and quickly spread to other dry goods nearby.

Apollo Pest Control provides pantry pest treatment, source identification, and prevention guidance for homes and small food-service businesses.

Common Pantry Pests

Signs of a Pantry Pest Problem

  • Small moths fluttering near the ceiling or pantry
  • Tiny beetles in flour, cereal, rice, pet food or bird seed
  • Webbing or clumping inside dry-good packages
  • Tiny holes in cardboard or paper packaging
  • Larvae crawling up walls or along shelves
  • "Sticky" or matted patches in flour or grain
  • An unusual smell in older bags of grain or seed

Where Pantry Pests Come From

It is almost always the case that pantry pests are brought into the home in a package — not chewed in from outside. The infestation often starts before the product reaches your shelf, in a warehouse, transport container, or manufacturing facility. The package is then opened in your kitchen and the pests spread to other dry goods nearby.

Most common sources we find during inspections:

  • Older flour or baking mixes pushed to the back of the pantry
  • Bulk-bin grains, oats, rice or beans
  • Dry pet food and bird seed stored in original bags
  • Holiday and seasonal items kept for more than a year
  • Dried fruit, nuts or trail mix
  • Decorative items containing dry grain (seasonal wreaths, dried arrangements)

How Apollo Approaches Pantry Pest Control

Pantry pest service typically includes:

  • Inspection of the pantry and adjacent storage areas
  • Identifying the source product (usually one or two specific packages)
  • Recommendations on disposal and cleaning
  • Targeted treatment of cracks, crevices and shelf edges if appropriate
  • Pheromone monitoring traps when needed to confirm activity has stopped
  • Storage and prevention guidance to avoid a recurrence

Prevention

The single most effective prevention step is sealed storage:

  • Transfer flour, sugar, cereal, grains, rice, pet food and bird seed into sealed containers
  • Check older pantry items for signs of activity
  • Use older stock first
  • Vacuum shelves periodically and wipe down edges and corners
  • Inspect new packages before adding them to the pantry
  • Freeze grains, flour or pet food for 3–4 days after purchase if you've had previous issues
  • Store bird seed and pet food outside the kitchen where practical

Sealed glass, hard plastic or metal containers are far more effective than the original packaging at preventing pantry pests from spreading from one infested package to several.

Pantry Pests in Restaurants, Cafés and Bakeries

Food-service businesses are particularly vulnerable to pantry pests because of bulk dry storage and frequent shipments. We provide treatment and monitoring designed for back-of-house dry storage, with written service records and recommendations for stock rotation and supplier inspection.
