How to Tell If You Have Rats or Mice

Category: Rodents

Introduction

Rats and mice are both rodents, but they behave differently, leave different signs, and need different control approaches. Knowing which one is present helps make treatment more effective.

Droppings

  • Mice: small, rice-grain sized droppings
  • Rats: larger droppings, typically about a half-inch long

Behaviour

  • Mice are curious and tend to investigate new objects quickly
  • Rats are cautious and often avoid new objects at first
  • Mice typically nest indoors near food and warmth
  • Rats often nest outdoors and travel into buildings to feed

Entry Points

  • Mice can enter through openings about the size of a dime
  • Rats typically need a larger gap — about a half-inch or more

Sounds

Both rats and mice can cause scratching or rustling sounds in walls, ceilings, and crawlspaces. Rats often sound heavier; mice sound lighter and faster.
