Signs of Bed Bugs Beyond Bites

Category: Bed Bugs

Introduction

Bites are often the first thing people notice when they worry about bed bugs. However, bites alone are not a reliable way to confirm bed bugs because people react differently. Some people develop visible irritation, while others may have little or no reaction.

Physical evidence is usually more useful.

Dark Spots

Small dark spots on sheets, mattresses, bed frames, or furniture can be a sign of bed bug activity. These spots may appear near seams, corners, or areas where bed bugs hide.

Dark spotting is one of the signs that should be investigated further.

Blood Spots on Bedding

Small blood spots may appear on sheets, pillowcases, or blankets. These marks can happen when bed bugs are crushed after feeding.

Blood spots alone do not confirm bed bugs, but they can be an important clue when combined with other signs.

Shed Skins

As bed bugs grow, they shed their skins. These pale, shell-like remains may be found near mattress seams, bed frames, furniture, baseboards, or cracks.

Shed skins can help confirm that bed bugs have been active in the area.

Eggs and Small Pale Insects

Bed bug eggs are small and easy to miss. They may be found in protected areas close to where people rest.

Likely hiding spots include mattress seams, bed frame joints, headboards, furniture cracks, baseboards, nightstands, couch seams, and screw holes and small gaps.

Live Insects

Live bed bugs may be found near beds, couches, furniture, or cracks in sleeping and resting areas. They tend to hide during the day, so direct sightings may be limited.

If you find a suspected insect, take a clear photo or save a sample if it can be done safely.

Activity in Furniture

Bed bugs are not limited to mattresses. They may hide in couches, chairs, nightstands, bed frames, headboards, and other furniture close to resting areas.

Used furniture should be inspected carefully before being brought inside.

When to Request an Inspection

A bed bug inspection may be helpful if:

  • Bites are recurring and unexplained
  • Dark spots or shed skins are found
  • Live insects are seen
  • Bed bug activity is suspected after travel
  • Used furniture was recently brought in
  • A rental suite is involved
  • Belongings may have been exposed
