What to Do If You Find a Wasp Nest

Category: Wasps and Stinging Insects

Stay Away From the Nest

Wasps become defensive when their nest is disturbed. The most important first step is to keep people and pets away from the area, especially if the nest is near a door, walkway, deck, patio, or work area.

What Not to Do

  • Do not spray the nest yourself if it is inside a wall, soffit, or in the ground
  • Do not block the entrance — trapped wasps often push through interior walls
  • Do not knock down a nest without proper protection
  • Do not stand close to the activity to take photos

What to Do

  • Note the exact location of the entrance
  • Keep children and pets indoors or away from the area
  • Use a different door if the nest is near an entryway
  • Take a photo from a safe distance if possible
  • Request professional service for nests near high-use areas
