Don't Panic
Bed bugs are stressful, but they are also a pest problem that can be managed. They are not a sign of poor housekeeping. Acting quickly and carefully gives the best chance of resolving the issue.
What Not to Do
- Do not move bedding, furniture, or belongings to another room — it spreads the problem
- Do not throw out the mattress before an inspection has been done
- Avoid over-the-counter foggers ("bug bombs") — they can scatter bed bugs into walls
- Do not start sleeping on the couch — that often just spreads bed bugs to another piece of furniture
What to Do
- Look carefully for physical evidence: dark spots, blood spots, shed skins, live insects, or eggs
- Take clear photos if possible
- Note where bites or signs have been seen
- Request a bed bug inspection before treating
- If you are renting, notify your landlord
