Wasps and yellowjackets often seem more aggressive later in the season. They may become more noticeable around patios, garbage bins, outdoor dining areas, fruit trees, sugary drinks, and food waste.
This behaviour is common and can make outdoor spaces uncomfortable or unsafe when nests are nearby.
As the season progresses, wasp and yellowjacket colonies can grow. A larger colony means more insects coming and going from the nest and more activity around nearby food sources.
A nest that was barely noticeable earlier may become a problem later.
Later in the season, wasps and yellowjackets are often more attracted to sugary foods and drinks. This is why they may become more common around patios, outdoor dining areas, garbage and recycling, fruit trees, compost, sugary drinks, barbecues, and restaurant patios.
Repeated wasp traffic usually means there is a nest nearby. The nest may be visible, hidden in a wall void, tucked under a deck, inside a shed, in a roofline, or underground.
If activity is concentrated in one location, avoid disturbing the area.
Wasps become defensive when a nest is disturbed. Spraying, hitting, blocking, or knocking down a nest can increase the risk of stings.
Ground nests can be especially risky because people may step near them without realizing they are there.
